A message from Toby Penty

To all members,

I would firstly like to say, a big thank you to all those who attended our last NBL match at Christmas time. Although again, we came out the wrong side of a 3-2 loss to Team skyfall, I think everyone who was there can agree that it was a great event, with some great matches.

On Monday 14th April, we will be hosting the University of Nottingham Badminton team for our 2nd home match this season. We are branding this match as....Third Time Lucky! A chance we hope to put our first win on the board at home and offer another great evenings worth of Badminton.

We will again be putting some of our young guns in the spotlight to give them the chance to show you their skills in a big display. Whilst, like I have previously said, this NBL format for our Wimbledon team is too give our young stars more exposure to the feel of top level Badminton, one of the other big reasons is to inspire the next generation coming through.

With that being said, I would particularly encourage all our young junior players from the academy sessions, and Saturday sessions, as well as their parents to come and watch.

Why do I say this? Well as a young Badminton player growing up at the club, I idolised the older players I saw training and competing at the club, two who you see still coaching there now in Ben Beckman and Sam Phillips. I would watch them play the Wimbledon u19 or any domestic tournament the club would run, I would watch them and all I would think is 'I want to be like them' and it helped inspire me to play the sport to the highest level I possibly could. The NBL gives the chance for our youngsters in England to look up to and aspire to be as good as these players, and even be able to say 'one day that will be me'

Now of course our club is not just about our junior players, we have a thriving playing and coaching system at the club for all our adult members as well. For those who are trying to improve their tactical and matchplay situations, I would say that coming to watch Badminton of this level is a sure way to improve these. From close quarters, being able to see top player techniques, shot choices, and especially for doubles players, the way to move around eachother on court, will give you a lot more understanding of the game, and some ideas of what you bring into your own game.

With all this being said, I still believe the most important thing about the NBL, is whether you are from a badminton, squash or gym background is to bring our community together, and celebrate just how great this club can be when we put on events like this. To help create evenings that as many members want to be a part of in either playing, volunteering or spectating and bring all of us together for certain evenings throughout the year.

So please buy your tickets below for our match on Monday 14th April, and bring the energy for a great night of Badminton, and we hope a win for WRFC.
